Sending text messages beyond TracPlus

The recommended way of sending and receiving messages anywhere in the world is to use the TP Connect app paired with a Rock7 device. TP Connect can be downloaded from the Appstore. We do not currently have an Android version of TP Connect.

If you do not wish to use TP Connect, or are unable to, you can compose messages directly on the keypad of a RockSTAR in such a way as to send them to an email address or a cell phone.

To send a message from a RockSTAR device to TracPlus users:

Compose and send the message from the device (either directly or using TP Connect).

hello everyone who has permission to view messages sent from this device

The message will be visible to all TracPlus users who have permission to see messages sent from the device. It typically appears as an entry in the events list, depending on whether the user is using TracPlus Pro, TracPlus Web, TracPlus for iOS or TracPlus for Android.

To send a message from a Rock7 device to another device:

Compose and send the message from the source device (either directly or using TP Connect), prefixed with the messaging handle for the target device.

@n123ac: hello there

The message will be delivered to the device that is installed in the asset with this messaging handle. You can view this message from within TP Connect for devices that do not have a screen.  The message will also be visible to TracPlus users with permission to see messages sent from the device.

To send a message from a Rock7 device to email:

Compose and send the message from the device (either directly or using TP Connect), prefixed with the desired email address.

bob@helico.com: this is a message sent to an email address

The message will be delivered to the desired email address. The message will also be visible to TracPlus users with permission to see messages sent from the device.

To reply to a device, or send a message to a device from email, the recipient cannot simply hit reply  - they must create a new email and address it using the messaging handle as follows:

to: n123ac@msg.tracplus.com
from:bob@helico.com:
subject:
type: plaintext
message: this is an email sent to a device

To send a message from a Rock7 device to a mobile phone:

Compose and send the message from the device (either directly or using TP Connect), prefixed with the desired mobile phone number.  The number must be in your ipad/iphone or RockSTAR contacts to be used.

+6421535293: this is a message sent to a mobile phone

The mobile number must include the international '+' prefix, country code and area code.

The message will be delivered to the desired mobile number as an SMS message. The message will also be visible to TracPlus users with permission to see messages sent from the device.

Replying to a message sent from a device to a mobile phone varies with the network that the mobile phone is on. If the message on the phone shows as coming from a short code number, the recipient can reply but must prefix the message with the correct messaging handle as follows:

@n123ac: message received loud and clear

If the message on the phone is shown as coming from a typical mobile phone number, you can reply without prefixing the message.

To send a message to multiple destinations:

You can send a message from a RockAIR to multiple destinations - and multiple types of destinations - by using a comma to separate the addresses:

+6421535293, @n123ac, bob@helico.com: this is a message sent to a mobile phone, another device and an email address

To set up or request a message handle:

When your device was activated, it will usually have a messaging handle assigned. To check that a messaging handle has been assigned, or to find out what your device's messaging handle is, please contact support@tracplus.com

Messaging fees:

Please note the following:

  • Each message sent incurs an airtime cost and may incur a message relaying fee.
  • If sent or received by satellite network, a text message 30 characters long (including spaces) is considered as one standard satellite message and will be part of any bundled monthly plan messages
  • If sent or received by a cellular network, a text message of 30 bytes is considered as one standard message, and will be part of any bundled monthly plan messages.
  • Messages sent to or from a device via satellite are billed to the device owner, with the originator only paying for a standard SMS text with their cell provider.
  • Messages relayed from a device to a cellphone via SMS will incur a cellphone relay fee of US 20c, billed to the device owner.
  • Messages relayed from a mobile phone to a device will incur a fee to the cellphone owner.
  • Messages relayed to or from a device via email do not incur any relaying fees.
