Geofences and Geofencing in TracPlus

Flightcell, NAL, Satamatics, Solara

TracPlus does not support geofencing on these devices.

RockAIR
RockAIR uses a very rudimentary form of geofencing to allow the suspension of standard tracking while in a particular area using the green Power/Suspend button (events of interest will continue to be transmitted). The device will send a TRACKING_RESUMED message and commence tracking again automatically when it moves beyond a predefined distance (radius is set using TP Connect).

RockSTAR, RockAIR and RockFLEET Geofences (circles)
On a RockSTAR, the user can also (using the on-screen menu) set their current location, a radius and check frequency of a single circular geofence.

Geofences can also be created on RockAIR and RockFLEET devices using TP Connect.

While active, if the device moves outside that circle, a OUTSIDE_GEOFENCE alert will be transmitted to TracPlus. There is no corresponding INSIDE_GEOFENCE alert when the device moves back inside that circle. That alert will appear in TP Pro and elsewhere as an EVT_ALERT with qualifying text.

In TracPlus, we can set up an action to be taken when that event is received, however, that requires developer intervention. There is currently no customer-facing tool to allow the definition and management of actions to be taken on receipt of particular events.

RockSTAR, RockAIR and RockFLEET Polyfences (polygons)
On these devices with firmware supporting V6 protocol or later, a more advanced feature is possible. Multiple polyfences can be defined (as closed polygons) and transmitted over the air to the device. When the GPS is permanently switched on and the device is connected to power, any transition over a polyfence boundary will trigger a transmission with a very accurate report exactly on the fence boundary, and a direction - entering the polyfence or leaving the polyfence.

Again, in TracPlus, we can set up an action to be taken when those events are received, however, that requires developer intervention. As above, there is currently no customer-facing tool to allow the definition and management of actions to be taken on receipt of particular events.

More fundamentally, however, there is currently no mechanism in TracPlus (developer, support or customer facing) to allow the creation and transmission polyfences to these devices. There is no intention to provide this capability outside of the new platform.

In summary: we do not currently support geofencing in any meaningful way, or in a way that a customer would find meaningful. There are some VERY limited corner cases where we could use the simple, circular geofence capability, but they are particularly limited. Comprehensive, customer-facing geofence capability and a supporting rules engine will undoubtedly form part of the new platform, but cannot be confirmed for MVP.
